Summer School: An Island Archaeobotanywith perspectives from ethnobotany and paleoecology

Pantelleria, Sicily, 22-30 June 2024.

The Summer School aims at expanding the knowledge on human-plant interaction on small islands since the first human colonization. Islands are geographically isolated environments with specific features in biodiversity and available resources. Humans have learned how to adapt and how to exploit the local resources, but also have introduced new species and developed local strategies to manage the often-limited woodland and to grow the crops. Even today, islanders of many Mediterranean islands have deep-rooted techniques that are the result of several centuries of occupation of these environments and have developed strategies to copy with the scarce availability of water, the soils full of stones or the absence of big flat areas.

Pantelleria will be the framework of the school, a volcanic island right in the center of the Mediterranean. Its history starts with the exploitation of the obsidian during the Neolithic, goes through the fortified village of the Bronze Age and becomes a strategic settlement during and after the Punic wars. Finally, earning a crucial role during the roman empire in the production of volcanic-origin fire pottery. The inhabitants developed several local agricultural strategies, some of them, like the vineyards, today belonging to UNESCO Heritage.

The Summer School may host up to 12 Master students/PhD students in archaeology, bioarchaeology, biology, agroforestry, ecology, cultural anthropology. They will be involved in theoretical and practical sessions, including fieldwork and trips to the most significant places on the island; the School will culminate in the writing of a small group project on the topics of the Summer School.

The teaching team will be composed by researchers and professors working on Pantelleria and other insular contexts.

The participants don’t have to pay a fee and the accommodation is included Fondazione Mirella Vitale is also offering a scholarship to cover the travel expenses of a participant from a not EU country
